Ok! First post on my review blog is a movie review...naturally. This is a strange movie to kick off with but it is a fairly new movie, so let's get started!
21 and over is marketed as a nutty, wild, up all night drinking flick that all college age males could find entertaining. Usually I would say what actors stared in the movie...but with this movie there is honestly no point. The more vulgar, say anything lead character looks and reminds me a lot of Shia Lebouf? Most of the movie his charactor takes the role of being the "asshole" buddy that every guy has. In that sense he is relatable to the audience and in more serious scenes where he opens up and stops with the act, he is not a bad actor at all. The other lead Casey, who is played by more notable Skylar Astin, is the friend who is afraid of taking risks and has his whole boring life planned after graduation, snore.
The Meat.
After getting over the fact that this "buddy" comedy was not going to be anything like Superbad, one of my all time favorite buddy films, this movie was more watchable. It had the vibe of one of those crappy American Pie spin-off straight to Dvd movies. Now, that being said, those movies can be entertaining in the right setting and mood. I was in the mood for a goofy light hearted comedy, it did in fact deliver on that end. It had foul language, booze, drugs, girls, and nudity. Really, everything a good summer college movie is supposed to have! What about the bad?
It is predictable. Ever seen Harold and Kumar go to Whitecastle? Same basic plot. It was just a movie that used story points from other movies like it, not really helping it out to stand up to the test of time. This was the case with every element of the movie. Everything had been done over and over before. Mindless as it was, there was still something about it.
That something is easy entertainment. People like familiar plots and knowing the screw up characters will get out of their predicament and all will end well. On a summer night like tonight, it also seemed to fit.
I Give this movie a 5.5/10. In the grand picture of film, it is horrible. As for a simple goofy watch while having a few drinks on the couch, it is watchable.
